This Day In History
1765 The Aeltesten Conferenz is organized. For now it will meet in Bethabara, but in 1772 it will move to Salem. It will still be meeting in the 21st century as the Central Board of Elders of Salem Congregation.
1838 The final Moravian service is held among the Cherokee east of the Mississippi. During the autumn some 14,000 Cherokee, from the aged to babes in arms, will begin the journey west on the Trail of Tears. More than 4,000 will die on the trek.
1854 Answering a call to “come over and help us” (Acts 16:9), Br. Francis Florentine Hagen crosses the Yadkin River from Friedberg and preaches at Cope’s Schoolhouse. This outreach will soon lead to the beginning of Macedonia Moravian Church.
1979 The cornerstone is laid for Friedberg’s fourth (and current) place of worship.
